Looking at the movable chain for my upcoming 1/6 Honda CRF 1000 Africa Twin build, this should be interesting.
Four sprues with 70 odd parts on each.

And a steel roller for every pin.

At least Tamiya give you a jig to build chain sections on and a tool to press the side link plates on which should make it a bit easier. I will need to pay attention though as the holes in the plates are tapered so must be fitted correctly.

Andy.

Looks fun. Nothing is glued? Just a taper fit? It will be interesting to see how you get on and how flexible and secure the finished chain is.

Not around here :smiling3: In any case, I think Tamiya used ABS exactly because normal modelling cement won’t work on it, and because it’s stronger than polystyrene, which seems important for a working motorcycle chain. Quite why it has to work, though, I’m not sure. Does the kit have a working engine too? :smiling3:

No, but you can push it up and down the bench making vroom vroom noises. :smiling3:
… as long as you don’t accidentally glue the front sprocket to the engine ;)

The chain will take a while to build as all the small parts need to be really clean to allow the plates and rollers to fit but at least you can build it in sections then join it all up.

It doesn’t seem worse than a lot of 1:35 scale workable track sets. Judging by the first photo the parts aren’t as small as many are in those, and at least these go together without glue so you don’t run the risk of them not working either.

If that's the quality of the chain think we're in for a treat with the actual bike Andy .:surprised::thumb2::thumb2::thumb2:

Finished building the chain, just need to start on the bike now.:smiling5:
At least you didn’t do what most armour modellers do: build a whole tank and only then start on the tracks with a dozen parts per link :smiling3:
