Bangladesh will purchase 16 fighter aircraft from China for $94 million as part of a programme to modernise its air force, a government official said on Thursday.

The official in the parliament office quoted Water Resources Minister Minister Hafizuddin Ahmed, who is temporarily in charge of defence, as telling the chamber that an agreement to buy the aircraft was signed last year.

The minister didn't give details of the type of aircraft that were being purchased.

China enjoys close ties with Bangladesh and is its largest supplier of military hardware.

Bangladesh's air force has 65 fighter aircraft and 39 helicopters, mostly a mix of Soviet-era and Chinese aircraft.
