Hello all,

Here we have it, my completed entry for the Halftrack group build. A 1/72 model from the Academy ground vehicles set, with a few figures from HaT and some aftermarket stowage.

I must admit I lost steam with this one a little! The HaT figures were disappointing (between being practically impossible to remove the seam lines, and having very low detail on the faces). Also olive drab always seems to come out looking too dark for me.

Anyway, here it is (including a obligatory 'paint-pot for scale' shot :smiling5: ). Thanks Dave for putting the GB together, and if anyone has any tips for the best looking Olive Drab paint out there, please let me know!

Greg

I'm rather fond of Testor's O/D but it only comes in 1/4 ounce bottles now. Nice job on the track BTW. Almost the "perfect" scale too. ;) :thumb2:

Nicely done Greg.

You do realise that if you'd asked for recommendations for the best Olive Drab on any other site, you'd have started a flame war! We're much more civilised here so you're likely to only get about 47 different options!

Thanks for having a go at the GB.

Tamiya OD changed colour a couple of times over the last 15 or so years, if I’m not mistaken. It used to be very close to the real shade, but moved away from that when the formula changed, AFAIK.

I kind of prefer Mr. Aqueous Color H-52 Olive Drab (1), which is a bit greyer than Tamiya’s. (They also have an Olive Drab (2) which is greener than (1).)

Looks great Greg. You have done very well to cope with the HAT figures. As for OD - mud, dust, sun fading UV etc pretty much means you can justify anything.

Except the darker ones as US Army went darker OD for postwar vehicles. Used to have three different OD makers. 2 Shades of PollyS OD, newer & faded WWII (no longer available), 3 shades of ModelMaster OD, AAF, WWII newer & faded (no longer available) and Tammy OD for post war. I'm now down to dregs of above. I brush paint exclusively.

Try the Testors 1/4 oz....I picked up 4 bottles for $1.99 ea. at Hobby Lobby day before yesterday it's the lighter flat (correct) O/D so should work for our purposes. Last time I was able to get ModelMasters it was $3.99 for 1/2 oz. bottles, so price is comparable.

Thanks for the comments all. Who knew there'd be so much variety in O/D shades? :smiling5: I'll have a look for the ones suggested. I knew I wasn't imagining it with the Tamiya one being too dark!
