Where to purchase plans?

Hello to all,

please allow me to ask where you purchase the plans for your models. I have some hours of searching on the internet behind me but except Sirmar and Fleetscale I couldn't find much of use.

I'm searching for plans of the Speybank (later German Doggerbank) in particular.

Maybe some of you can help me with information about companies or publishers of English model boat plans (not only Speybank, but Speybank would be awesome!)? I appreciate your help.

Kind regards

Matt

Hello and welcome Matt, What kind of vessel is/was Speybank ? It might be a Scottish ship with that name. I live in the valley that the river Spey flows through, the name Speybank is very common in this area. Perhaps it was one of a "River Class" ship or a company that named their ships after rivers ? There is a register of all Scottish built ships at Strathclyde University in Glasgow that could be worth searching on their web site. Any more clues , period, type, build date ? (hint; dont limit your searches to "English" ships, try British ships. What you have done is like looking for a German ship but only searched Bavarian ships)

Hello Duncan,

thank you very much for your reply. I will try the Glasgow university website to find some more about the boat. I didn't limit the search on English ships, most of the time I didn't consider the country and serched by the names in general.

The Speybank was one of 18 ships of the Inverbank class. The Inverbank class vessels were built 1924 and 1926 and served for the Robert Weir Shipping & Trading CO. LTD (Bank Line). I have found a little bit about them here:

I don't know if it's Speybank or Doggerbank on the pic.

Speybank was captured in 1941 by the German Raider Atlantis and became a German blockade runner under the name Doggerbank. The boat was torpedoed by the German U 43 in 1943 with only one man surviving. I have read the book about the Doggerbank's story (The sinking of Doggerbank by Hans Herlin), that's how the interest in a model of it came.

Do you have special archives in Britain which offer to send plans of old vessels?

We have some here in Germany, most of them are not really cheap but a few of them offer acceptable prices. But unluckily nothing of the Doggerbank

Kind regards

Matt

Have alook at the following, not only interesting in themselves but they contain further reference material. Note particularly the link to the book "The Ship with Five Names" which may well be worth trying to purchase:

Also check out Ebay item number :8420457530

Which is another book by the name "Death of a Phantom Raider"

Also interesting to note that a company called "Sextant" made a cast metal model of the ship.

No plans as yet but I will have a look through some of my resources when I get home in just over a weeks time.

Well done Bunkie ! The Doggerbank Story was enthralling, sad, as most war events are. A well researched piece by the author.
