I don't think the food would necessarily need to be dodgy Col. As I understand it, at that time mess facilities aboard ship consisted of a series of plates literally nailed to the tables. Food was served and eaten from them and 'washing up' was done by throwing a bucket of sea water over them after meals. Makes me wonder how they survived at all - let alone just restricting themselves to a few odd fluids on deck!

Ta for that info Dave, we've just been discussing how bad it must have been aboard ship at this time, no wash facilities as such, dietary restrictions, lack of decent sleeping facilities etc.

Anyway the cannon dio is off to its new home now, I've given it to the father in law who's mad on history of this era.
