Here are the two candidates for my Pacific build, pretty basic kits but I'll be taking my time as I want them to look as good as I can, may even get some aftermarket bits and bobs (because they really are pretty basic!).

This will be taking a bit of a back seat for the time being (have to finish my Vietnam build and do the Modern Armour GB), just wanted to get the thread started.

So, the two of them will be in some sort of dogfight situation, got a few ideas, not quite sure which to go with yet. Still, plenty of time to decide.

My main reason for choosing these two planes was I love both the Corsair and the Zero, also, I never knew until I saw the kit that the UK flew Corsairs.

Wicked, I love the corsair as well. I was especially glad to see one in the flash at an airshow earlier this year.

Hopefully your dio will be the corsair dominating the zero :devilangelfight:

Good to see Airfix have at least improved their Zero, even if it is a bit basic!

Nice choice Drew,

I know there's a long way to go and no doubt you would have found out, but just in case......

The British carrier based Corsairs had special roundel markings. These were blue/white with white 'bands' at 9 and 3 o'clock. The RAF roundel was considered too close to the Japanese one!

Hope this is of use to you during any research you might undertake.

Good luck with the build.

Thanks Ron. The kit comes with options for a blue Corsair (with blue roundels) for the Pacific theatre and one with standard camo and normal roundels for (I think) Operation Goodwood (?).

I did a little bit of reading on these (although pics of UK Corsairs are few and far between) and apparently some still had the standard camo scheme when they were sent to the Pacific, only changing to the blue a little later.

Not sure which scheme to go with but I can try to find out more before making my decision.

I actually bumped into a Corsair the other day. I'd never seen one face to face before, it was a bit of a beast - very impressive. Good choice to build.

Okay, so I'm back now. Been missing for a bit because I got totally fed up with the build I was on (the modern armour GB) and didn't want anything to do with the hobby (didn't even come on here). I am going to finish the GB build but I decided that a break from 1:35 was the best thing I could do. Since starting this build I've actually got some real enjoyment from the hobby.

Anyway, I've made quite a start on the A6M2 today.

Here are the photo's of the plane as it currently is.

As I said, I've really enjoyed this build so I have another plane to build for this project and I'm really looking forward to it.

I've got a lot of 1:35 in the stash so I'm going to have to split out the projects, do a 1:35 then a different scale project, 1:35, different, and so on.

It's gone together really well so far, no real issues. A couple of wee ejector marks but nothing some filler couldn't handle, they were in the area where the pilots feet are so even without the pilot you probably wouldn't have seen them.

The "Aotake" colour was home made (2:1 mix of Tamiya Metallic Blue and Gunze Sangyo Metallic Green), personally I think it's a bit dark but hey ho.

Anyway, I won't blah blah on, I'm hoping to have this plane finished (at least to the point that I need it be for the build) and the other one started by the end of next week (I have the week off so should get extra build time).

Feels good to be back.

So the Zero is coming along nicely.

I almost have it finished, just need to sort out the paint the canopy frames and attach it to the plane.

It turned out to be not as basic as I first thought, a fun little build. Obviously it could be taken to a higher standard than mine but I didn't want to get too in depth with it (for reasons that'll be clear once I complete the project).

The Corsair on the other hand is a horse of a different colour.

It's just awful.

Honestly, it's really bad.

The cockpit consists of a pilot and a seat!!

No instrument panels, no detail of any kind. I think they spend the extra plastic money on flash and rivets - there are plenty of both!

I'm not even going to get onto the fit!

So, I've ordered a replacement and until that arrives I'm going to jump in on the "What if..." SIG.

I'll get some photo's of the Zero on tonight or tomorrow.

So, here's the Zero. Got a little bit of weathering to do and need to paint and fit the canopy. Also need to put a few holes in the canopy.

And no, I haven't forgotten the cowling and propeller, these won't be seen on the finished diorama so I don't need to put them on. The underside won't be seen either so other than the basic colour I haven't done anything to it (no decals on the underside).

So my replacement Corsair arrived yesterday, so much better than the Airfix one.

I know it's the wrong model for a WWII FAA Corsair but it shouldn't be too difficult to model it correctly.

It only comes with French decals but I already have decals from the Airfix one and I bought the Sky Models F4U decal sheet so have plenty to choose from.

Anyway, here are the pics of the Corsair, just waiting on my primer arriving now and then I can get started on it!

Got the cockpit more or less finished here.

Had to wait for some bits and pieces arriving so haven't been able to get much done on this. All arrived yesterday though so I can get going with it.

The Revell pilots I'd ordered turned out to be too big for the Italeri kit so I had to find an Airfix blob to stick in the cockpit.

Anyway, here's the office, should have some shots of the plane pretty soon (maybe tomorrow).

I'm at a good stage with this one and really enjoying myself.

I've created the base on the display case bottom. I've got to paint the Corsair, mix and pour the "water" and make a prop blur. I have it all planned and I'm on time for the end of the month (maybe even the end of next week all going well).

I'll let the photo's do the talking.

Fire away with any comments or questions.

Nearly there now.

The Corsair's painted and the water's done.

I'm not too happy with the way the water turned out, I should've done it the way I'd initially planned!

I just don't like it but too late now to do anything about it. It's quite bubbly too but they will be hidden by the waves I'm planning to do.

I also attempted to make a prop blur but all three attempts were awful so I gave up and went with the normal kit propellor.

It's a dio I'm going to have another bash at in the future when my modelling skills are a bit better.

Anyway, here's where we are at the moment, got to wait maybe until the weekend until I can do the waves.
