Starbug (Red Dwarf series) 1/35th scale

For all you Red Dwarf fans (and if you haven't watched it i suggest you have a look-see as in my opinion it's one of the best British comedy programs) ... i present (hopefully) a fairly accurate (hopefully) model of Starbug 1.

Started by cheating a little and buying some Balls

These are 10 / 12 / 15 mm which gives the correct size difference between the separate pods of the craft.

View attachment 65850

Using a wooden kebab stick to hold them in position, the three balls are glued (PVA) together.

The rear pod has the back quarter cut away and covered to accommodate the engines and thrusters

Have used a dremmel to bore out some holes that will be needed in the future for housing antennae and "a sensor" at the front.

Quick coat of paint to seal the polystyrene and card .... groovey!! :smiling3: :smiling3:

Top program, some of the later series dropped off a bit, but still a classic.

Looking good, will watch this and see how it develops.

A brilliant series, and I could be wrong here, but I think daughter No1 actually read the first book in her English class ! Cool teacher.

Yes mate, you'd be right if I hadn't been such a prat and put mm instead of cm.

It's actually 37cm (14.5 inch in our money)

Well spotted :smiling3: :smiling3: :smiling3:

Interesting, I love a scratch build, even better when it's something I know.

Make certain you include the spare red light bulb in case of red alerts. (Conversation between rimmer and kryten, for those wondering, at Orange alert,

rimmer- go to red alert,

kryten- are you sure sir,

r-of course I'm sure,

k- it's just that it does mean changing the bulb sir!)

Loved the early series, it started to tail off when the sfx budget increased, sadly the story decreased, then when Arnold, 'ace', Rimmer left it really lost itself I think.

A little interesting side note, in the episode where lister winds up married to the big hairy creature, does a runner and gets chased, the father of said hairy creature is Ainsley Harriet. :smiling3:

m1ks - The Gelf! "CHANGE OF PLAN.......LLLEGGGGIIIITTTTTTTTTT" One of the classic episodes!

Also agree about it tailing off. Anything after series VI was a bit pants. And series X is terrible!!!

But considering the limited budget they had, the early stuff is amazing!!

Anyway - how are your big balls looking Colin?

Stuart, my balls are green, stuck together and I've started dremmeling bits out of them, but like Dave says .. At least I'm not working with a small chopper like Tony :smiling3: :smiling3: :

Innuendo over ..... Its coming on and I'm off to find some old electrical components for the surface detailing today

Some say its sad for remembering and quoting excerpts from tv series....I'm going to top the sadness and mention that just after season five I applied for mastermind with red dwarf as my specialist topic. I received a letter back to say that another applicant had chosen the subject and I was free to apply for the following year.

When I watched the program he passed on three questions which I knew the answers.... Fortunately it saved me some embarrassment coz I only got 1 question right from the 13 or so general knowledge.

The Gelf, that was the name I couldn't remember, thanks.

As a slight aside, I read backwards as a friend bought it and though the episode was good, the book read sooo much better and far far funnier, theres a particular part of the book where the cat goes into the woods to do what they do and........ well, for those not knowing, everything happens backwards on this planet food and drink is regurgitated onto the plate, santa's a malicious fat bloke who climbs down chimneys an steals kids toys etc so you can imagine. :smiling3:

I think the arnold / ace episode was my second all time fave next to the JFK assasination / time travelling for a curry episode which was the best outright.

So when can we expect updated pics?

Your wish is my command :smiling3: :smiling3:

Spent ages with a dremmel just taking the very top surface of the polystyrene off to form the main cabin window (just looks better recessed a little rather than painted on.

Most of the afternoon was spent sticking the basics of the detail so i have somewhere to run the cables to

Looking good, such a simple idea and i'd never have thought of it.

Arnold and the space corps would be proud of your efforts so far, :smiling3:
