Tamiya's Lancaster build.

Ian I'm always glad of advice,particularly from someone who has built many of these before.

I wish I'd done my nacelles that way! I'm not happy with them and have put them aside for a while. There's a bit of remedial work to be done,followed by some rescribing and maybe even some riveting. Cripes! I haven't had the riveter out for ages,I'm not even sure where it is

I've been eyeing up a Pacific Coast Fw 190 as some light relief. It too will probably need some work but at least I'm familiar with what I'm trying to build!

Just a quickie as I got an hour in this morning.

If you really must build the Tamiya Lancaster buy the Eduard pre-cut masks. I masked the front turret in about 10 minutes with these masks. It would have taken an hour if I'd been using my normal tape and sharp scalpel method! It would be made a bit trickier because the molding of the frames is not particularly crisp,at least on my kit.

The hardest bit is interpreting Eduard's instructions

Not much progress due to other committments.

I have had a look at Hans-Werner Lerche's book "Luftwaffe Test Pilot-Flying Captured Allied Aircraft of WW2" in an effort to find how a captured Lancaster may have been marked,not for this project but maybe a future,smaller scale,effort.

I finally came across this. It is in the context of a flight towards Berlin during which the Luftwaffe's night fighters would attempt interceptions and test their various systems against a captured Lancaster.

"Any flights to Berlin, particularly with a suspicious ‘bird’ like this, had to be duly announced and of course one had to be ready at any moment to fire the currently-required identification flares: the yellow-painted engine nacelles and wing tips and the German crosses alone were no life insurance."

I guess the Germans couldn't be arsed to paint the entire underside of such a large aircraft yellow,as they would have done for a smaller type.

Back in the day of no PC's we were happy what we made but as we see other models it becomes some kind of competition to do better.

Excuses.....it's the evenings closing in! By the time I get a chance to do anything it's dark and I don't like working,particularly painting,under lights.

I'm hoping that there'll be something to show this week,maybe by the weekend,otherwise it will be a while as I'll have very little time in the den until the end of November!

I've managed to get a basic paint on the various bits.

These will get a coat or two of Klear over the next couple of days,once I've resprayed the front and rear turrets to get rid of the "Night"

That may then be it for a while as I may find myself away from the bench for a while.

I've now started this one again.

I applied the red lines on the underside using thedecals from the kit. They were terrible. I effevtively glued them on with Klear. They look okay but might yet come off,allowing me to spray the lines.

I will certainly spray the upper surface walkway lines. I've masked off and will spray a suitable dark grey (not black). RLM 66 usually works!

Not changed in a million years Ian. Man has always tried to better what ever confronts us in this world. Even to straighten bananas.

A long tradition & I love it the world would be a very boring place without it. Competition. (even at my ancient age it has not dented probably got worse trying to keep up with some of you blokes).

Sorry to barge in on your thread Steve.

Ron: couldn't you mark out the lines with thin strips of tape cut to the right width, add your mask using the strips as guides, then remove the marking strips?

Tamiya have molded some trenches into the wings to represent these lines. I just masked along the edge of their lines and did a quick spray with RLM 66 (dark grey).

Part of the problem is that if you apply the decals the coloured part will lie over this trench and the surrounding film will drape over the raised edges,very difficult to prevent silvering.

I've just applied some decals to the fuselage and they went on okayish....bizarre.

Did you apply the red lines over the 'out-lines' underneath the wings ? These 'out-lines' are normally the problem

as the red decals don't fit flush to the plastic and is a nightmare and silver badly, I've found it best to remove

these 'out-lines' so the decal sit flush.

The 'out-lines' for the red lines and black upper walk-way lines derive from when the kit was first introduced back

in 1976 when you only got wing/fuselage roundels/codes, The rest of the stuff was painted on!

It's not the only way that this kit shows its age!

I've had a quick look at the decals that were applied and treated yesterday and they have the most apalling silvering. Looks like I'll be dealing with that next! Sharp knife and Microsol at the ready.

I've not given up. In fact I'm edging towards finall construction.

Wings:

Fuselage with horizontal stabilisers/fins temporarily attached.

And the whole thing "push fitted". That's an A3 cutting mat.

I'll be toning down that exhaust with a highly thinned grey.

I most certainly did,that was a top tip from your good self. I absolutely guarantee something bad requiring loads of remedial work would have happened to the undercart otherwise Anyone who builds one of these and doesn't spend about 15 minutes knocking up the little boxes is either brave or foolhardy in my considered opinion.

Having finally got around to more or less finishing this thing I have no idea where I'm going to put it. Bear in mind that I usually build 1/32 which most would consider big!

I also have no idea how I'll get some snaps of it. There's plenty of evidence on this site to show what an inept photographer I am,strictly a snap shot specialist. My "concrete" base is nowhere near big enough either
