Jim - thank you very much. It doesn't matter if yours doesn't have all the details if you enjoyed building it. You can always have another go - try the Hobbyboss one. More detail OOB than the Tamiya yet not stupidly expensive

I donned my pith helmet and safari suit and went on an expedition into one of the deep dark stashes hunting the Hobbyboss 223. Duly captured and dragged kicking and screaming back into the light. They obviously have no idea on the ammo tins either as the etch racks are left empty

The long thing at the front of the HB gun mount is the jacking mechanism toothed rack - there is no ammo tin

For what will be seen an approximation of the workings and ammo tin will do nicely

the right bracket of the air filter was annoying me, I tried to fix it and mangled it instead - replacement made and installed

added the arms that fasten the mg mount to the turret ring so that the mg follows the turret - made from armature wire

flattened the ends in pliers and fastened to the turret ring with the inner end then CA'd to the mg mount

turns out I had the info all along on the Toadman cd

No the watermarks are not on the cd - I have cropped these pics, reduced the resolution and watermarked them to make it obvious where they originated. The cd's (or downloads as they seem to be now - although site hasn't been updated since 2018) generally contain two or three hundred high quality photos and are definitely worth the asking price

tonight I looked at the etch fire extinguisher holder

the Eduard instructions would have you try to clean off moulded straps without destroying the extinguisher - looking at references the kit version is not that good anyway so it was easier to just make another one from rod, punched disks and a bit of brass wire


installed on the rear wing it I think it looks ok and definitely better than the kit version

Ah, OK You had me wondering, because watermarks that extensive would make the photos almost useless, so I couldn’t imagine really he sold them like that.

Jim - extinguisher is passable and should look ok under paint and a load of dust. With the crew on top that I hope to add you won’t see much at all inside which is why I didn’t spend tons of time detailing - just the bare minimum to suggest the various bits of kit in there

I then assembled the aerial

these are the kit mounting points on the aerial - rectangular blocks

so I filed them down

once glued to the mounting poles I finished filing them down to match the diameter of the poles

the poles had the solid ends scraped out and pivot pin ends added

Duro is a sculpting putty (not filler) also called Kneadatite or Kneadatite Green Stuff

It is a two part putty (one yellow strip and one blue strip - when mixed turns green) with a plastic like consistency - takes detail well and never sets rock solid so if thin bits get caught they tend to bend slightly rather than snap off

It can be rolled out wafer thin and cut to shape with a sharp blade for straps etc

With it being plastic like you can even superglue it to something before it cures to anchor it down and then sculpt it in place

It is not water soluble and does not sand very well

Some people mix it with Magic Sculpt to change the consistency

added handles and filler caps to the previously assembled cans - the handles will get tidied once the glue sets

I have found it is easier to do them once glued in place - when loose they are rather fragile


front tow hooks added


rear tow hooks also added



jack added to rear right mudguard

not the best jack so it got a little bit of fettling including chiselling out the foot plate

kit solid mounts carefully removed and replaced with the etch mounts



I noticed that in a lot of the reference photos the lights had covers over them so I sculpted some covers

the mounting points on the hull are not very good and will need some filling - should be fun as not easy to get at
