Geoff, Mick, Andy and Andrew - thanks for your positive posts. They sure do make a difference.
After much masking, spraying, remasking, more spraying and rather a lot of rude words we are here. Red tail and identification stripes. Yellow and red first ....
..... and then the black stripes
Tail and stripes will be masked and then the metallic overall.
Jim
Hi all Ian - I will use Vallejo Metal Color. Maybe not quite as good as Alclad but for a water based metallic it's very good. Also I don't need a 'good' finish.
I masked up all the identification stripes and the red on the tail. I wanted the overall metallic finish to be a bit weathered and faded but thought that a black pre-shade might be a bit over the top. I have used the Vallejo Metal Color Dark Aluminium in patches, hopefully when I give an overall coat of Aluminium the darker shade will show through and break up the finish. Hopefully my airbrush skills will be good enough not to obliterate the darker colour completely. My record with successful pre-shades is not good
Great paintwork there Jim
I love the stripes on the wings.... very striking indeed....
What with the red on the tail plane this is going to be a real eye catcher
A good scheme indeed but I would not be to metallic in the finishes.
Remember it was a wooden airframe covered with cloth and painted with dope... no not that kind of dope!
In this case in a colour called speed silver I believe a matt white Aluminium colour.
Once again all your kind comments are greatly appreciated. Ian - you're quite right. A metallic looking paint rather than actual metal. Thanks for that
The aftermarket decals went on a treat. They really were some of the best I've come across and I only lightly glossed the areas where they went.
You can't tell the painted stripes from the decals
I then airbrushed a satin varnish coat to seal the decals and removed the masking.
