HMS Hood 1/200 Hachette /Amati Wooden kit Build Part 33 - 34

Hello again thanks for the kind words re Covid the after effects are pretty bad too in my case feeling weak and very cold like symptoms still
Anyway on with the build with the completion of part 34 the planking which began in part 22 has come to an end with roughly 50 planks per issue for 12 issues that’s around 600 planks glued pinned and now they have to be sanded to a smooth contour oh joy I’ve no idea how long that will take possibly a week maybe 2 so below is the current state of the model looks like some filler will also be required as well sorry for the amount of pictures but this hull is over 4 ft long and to fit into one picture would leave the resolution so bad you wouldn’t be able to see how rough it still is
Regards
Colin

HMS Hood Amati 1/200 Parts 33-34 Hull Sanding

Hello again well I had a good weekend the hull has been sanded smooth after applying approx 600 planks this took 12 issues and about 3 months of work at around 50 planks per issue can now move onto superstructure at last
See photos below hopefully showing how smooth the hull is now
I used the finger tip to detect blemishes raised planks etc and then sanded that area till it was smooth and level with next and so on until I had gone down one side and up the other so to speak the only area left is the bow where apparently the end pieces are not fitted yet which is strange as the stern ones were the 1st items applied before the planking began oh well suppose they know best

Hi Colin
Looking good. Planking and sanding must be time consuming and rather tedious but has to be done.

Great work, that sanding effort seems to have paid off very nicely.

Keep up the great work.

HMS Hood 1/200 Hachette /Amati Wooden kit Build Parts 36-40

I won’t bore you with numerous pictures of what’s has preceded this entry suffice to say more of the same namely gluing brass pe around the wooden structures and adding an occasional door where needed and don’t forget all structure work will be painted in a battleship grey so all the brass work will merge into the rest of the ship unless that actual piece being modelled is actually brass
So instead here are a couple of pictures 1 port 1 starboard showing the brass pe glued into place so far hopefully issue 41 will be more interesting

Hi Colin
The brass is a lot of work but certainly looks good when done.

HMS Hood 1/200 Hachette /Amati Wooden kit Build Part 41

I was wrong part 41 consisted of 4 squares of wood which you glue together into 2,s which are apparently are a couple of spacers here’s hoping for part 42 though down hold your breath

HMS Hood 1/200 Hachette /Amati Wooden kit Build Parts 42-44

Hello everybody to my continuing build of the Amati HMS Hood this time we are moving into brasswork pe big time as all the issues apart from 42 up to 47 contain nothing but pe so 1st off part 42 which consists of several wood side pieces that the pe will be glued to from issue 43 onwards
2C369750-2A31-44F3-BDA6-0A6B0D4684C2.jpeg44B47BB1-FA82-4EBA-8678-6AF7043511C1.jpegC8F077D7-9F5F-4352-8A1C-B384BDE36534.jpegA291F6D1-E3ED-4F0A-A0B6-ECB6BEEC1E30.jpeg
Now onto the pe from 43 to 46 I have included a couple of pictures of 1/64 scale model of the Hood built before the ship was laid down this model now or at the time of this publication resided in the Transport museum in Glasgow
Most of the pe is simply a case of sticking it on top of the wooden frame work then add additional pe on top of that a case in point the hose reel brackets and tiny eyebolts and cleats each at around 1mm in diameter I also had to glue 26 buttressing ribs to a long piece of pe walling presumably there’s a second one at a later stage for the other side to look forward to after 46 we don’t touch the hull or decking for about 10 issues as from 47 to 57 are only dealing with the 4 main gun turrets and additional add on items all pe again oh joy

HMS Hood 1/200 Hachette /Amati Wooden kit Build Parts 47 1st main gun turret
Three postings in one evening your being spoilt anyway I thought I’ll crack on and have a go at building the 1st turret which had should we say issues not with the parts me I got the 1st section done namely gluing the turret together and the main guns which had a seam line running down both sides so this has been removed using a blade in a scraping motion all well and good then came the dreaded pe got the front right side done easily no problem the rear was a different kettle of fish suffice to say it took me 4 attempts to get it looking right and that was after I did some surgery on one part as it wouldn’t fit whatever way I tried so in the end I chopped off the offending piece and went with that
Next off doing the rangefinder I glued the pe the wrong way round and wondered why I couldn’t see the rivet detail along the top edge whoops out with the scalpel prise off the piece and re-attach it the correct way round after that I thought that’s enough for tonight and it will give the glue a fighting chance of setting firm to boot

Regards

Colin

PS

Why does the Hoods turret resemble an old 15amp round pin plug which means I’m showing my age and it’s time to stop
