HMS Hood 1/200 Hachette /Amati Wooden kit Build Parts 49 & 50

Latest small update almost a duplicate of 47 & 48 with exception of a tiny pe piece at the front top of the turret & no pe work on the side and a different configuration for the ladder the rangefinder is exactly the same as part 48 once again scrapped the seam lines off the gun barrels as per previous entry

Regards

Colin I can now see why these kits cost so much ! A tremendous amount of work and well worth it.
Where on earth are you going to display it ?

I have a large table in the living room in front of the T V it can go on when finished the problem will be where’s the Metal Titanic going to go as I have if you count the wooden one from 2010 I think and highly detailed card model from Poland 3 of them then there’s HMS Victory The Cutty Sark Sovereign of the seas if I ever get parts 1 & 2 as I seem to have lost them another wooden Bismarck and again a highly detailed card model from Poland each if you count the bowsprits from the galleons are nearly 4ft long plus 2 smaller models HMS Bounty & the Endeavour + and these are the killers as I have nowhere to put them at present all in 1/32 scale Lancaster B17 B29 B52 & Vulcan BMk2 the B52 wingspan is around 5ft+ The 1/46 scale
Millennium Falcon a Dragon Saturn V Skylab 1/72 3 1/8 scale cars Aston Martin DB5 Jaguar E Type & The Back To The Future Delorean a 1/18 Spitfire Mk1 and about 30 other kits in my stash ranging from 1/144 &1/72 scale Concorde & TU144’s 15 or so 1/32 aircraft about 10 1/48 aircraft & a 1/72 Space Shuttle which again is on the large size I think that just about covers it

Hi Colin
Nice work on the turret. I'm a little surprised that on a kit like this turned metal gun barrels weren't included. That's quite a lot of very large models you have

HMS Hood 1/200 Hachette /Amati Wooden kit Build Parts 51-54

Hello again continuing the turret build same as before but I’ve noticed each turret is slightly different with way of the pe applied to them as you can see from the pictures the 4th turret having tiny pieces of pe added to it see the part against my index finger I’ve not included any mag shots this time as they are all the same as previous ones with only slight variations for the different pe fittings which you can from the attached picture

Sorry Colin, got behind on this... So just had a catch up.

This really is some amazing work on display. Hadn't appreciated that the turrets would be plastic.

What will you use for primer?? Rattle can I assume given the size and mixture of materials?

Keep up the great work.

HMS Hood 1/200 Hachette /Amati Wooden kit Build Parts 55-56
The main turret barbets construction here again there’s not much to do to start with just glue some discs together to make structures the main guns will sit on there’s a 1disc a 2 disc a 4 disc & finally a 5 disc after the glue has dried overnight they are painted a white primer before adding more pe to them then painting them a medium grey if the colour is accurate as I have done research into the hood colour scheme for the Denmark Straits action and it turns out parts of the ship has a grey with a blue tinge to them
Also Hood never had red anti fouling paint it was supposedly a greyish colour so why does every model of it show a red bottom ? Anyway I have to obtain light stone for the blast bags on the turrets and medium grey for the turrets guns and finally the white barbets see photos below with my parts of the build as well bit short this time but there’s lots more to do after the glue and paint have dried

HMS Hood 1/200 Hachette /Amati Wooden kit Build Parts 55-56 Main Gun Turret's Painted

Good Evening

Here is the latest update regarding the main gun turrets they have now been primed in white as instructed the additional pe has been added the ring on the bottom of the single disc was a right pain as it wouldn’t stick to start it then decided to make its own ring which was different to the circumference of single wooden base so eventually I got it there but it took 4 attempts and lots of cursing
The other 2 additions were ladders added to the side of the 4 & 5 piece bases no dramas here
After the glue had dried overnight I then gave them the 1st of 3 coats of paint then moved onto assembling the guns into the blast bags then adding these to the now painted turrets I then wedged all 4 turrets up against my cutting mat so that the gun angle would be the same for all as these turrets will turn by won’t elevate it was then a case of touching up the paint work
The blast bags at present are way to prominent and need dulling down considerably with a grey wash
Finally I have placed the turrets in their approximate positions on the model to keep them out of harms way hopefully
Anyway part 57 is assembling a ack ack gun with loads of PE oh joy look forward to that one as that will be tonight’s work

Regards

Colin

HMS Hood 1/200 Hachette /Amati Wooden kit Build Parts 59-60 4thAnti Aircraft Gun Build Photos

Hello again well we’re up to the end of part 60 that’s made 4 Anti Aircraft Guns not sure how many Pom Pom sets it had but from issue 61 were building the the 4.5 secondary armament so anyway I won’t bore you the same sort of pictures as before here’s the 4 completed along with some sort of turret mounting
They all look a bit rough the moment that’s because they are this is my 1st time using photo etch extensively as here so I’m still learning as I go so when I get round to building Bismarck I will be better equipped skill wise to deal with the pe that no doubt more extensive than the hoods if my look at the kit is anything to go by

Well, only just found this. Nice to see yours is about as far along as mine was, until my build stalled a while back!

And so, she sits on a shelf in my conservatory, right outside the kitchen window - as a constant source of shame

One thing I will say, is check your references for the stern, because I'm pretty sure the model is wrong in having the 'step' go all the way back

Thanks for that I will I know Hood had several refits during the 20 or so years prior to 1941 so they may have altered it somewhat and depending on what diagrams Amati used to produce the model might explain that step you are referring to
Didn’t they have trouble with anything other than a moderate swell with water washing over the rear decks as they were so low in the water which also was used as an excuse not to increase the deck armour from I think it was 3” to 5” which had it been the case the battle of the Denmark Straits could have had a different outcome

Colin
