HMS Hood 1/200 Hachette /Amati Wooden kit Build Parts 117-119

Ok we’ve finished added deck details for now and returned to using wooden pieces to start construction of the bridge of the ship this was fairly straight forward and I’m now waiting for the paint to dry on the brass parts before I can precede any further

HMS Hood 1/200 Hachette /Amati Wooden kit Build Parts 120-121 Prop Shafts fitting

Hello again been doing loads of sub assemblies this time and marking out and fitting the prop shafts also how I decided on my colour scheme using the latest info from the net via Sovereign Hobbies which I think is the closest you will get to Hoods last known colour scheme
The final set show the sub assemblies completed so far obviously the main turrets pom-poms and lifeboats rubber dinghy’s were all prior constructions but everything else is new
I’ve only shown the Starboard side for the props the port is identical due to amount of photo stages this post will be in 3 sections this section 1

Regards

Colin

HMS Hood 1/200 Hachette /Amati Wooden kit Build Parts 122 Section 2 Sub Assemblies
I had a major issue here part 723 in part 123 was either not in the kit or I’ve managed to loose it over the 10 year tenure that this kit has endured so I’ve fashioned a replacement using 2 bits of spare deck planking and 4 pieces of scrap sprue brass 1mm in diameter and a home made door from another piece of scrap planking just to be awkward it had to be oval the other side had the mouldings for the surround and the door already moulded onto it

Here we add more brass work to parts already constructed as you can see some of the brasswork needs to be curved to fit around the structure I used a pencil as a rough curve radius and added slight adjustments using needle nosed pliers to get the final curve shape
After that it was a case of assembling the side panels onto the structure as per instructions
Next came the 2 black wooden cubes I’ve previously constructed this had brass panels glued to them using pva as I wanted time to slide each piece into position something the ca I’m using doesn’t allow I also prefitted the doors whilst the panels were still on the brass fret as it’s a lot easier to fit fiddly parts like these while there flat and firmly attached to something than afterwards as per the instructions
And finally added 2 cranes to another deck piece using Tamiya extra thin quick dry cement
Also you’ll notice two type cupola fittings where I substituted thin card for the outer walls this is because the brass supplied refused to stick even after it was annealed to make it more flexible I think that made the glue not want to stick even more so in the end I binned the 2 brass pieces to the spares box and went with card instead besides once painted no one will notice the difference

Colin

Colin,

If I've got it right, you've got 10 more steps left. Is that right?

Yep that’s correct so something pretty drastic got to take place in the remaining issues as at the moment Hoods looking like it’s in the middle of a re-fit and they still haven’t said paint the hull which I find is completely illogical as Spock would say given the amount of deck pieces now added
I painted my hull about 2 weeks ago around issue 100 and in so doing I managed to damage 2 of the 4” secondary guns bending the barrels on one and snapping one the barrels off the other completely

That does sound rather illogical as you say. I hope the barrels were repairable?

Yes I have repaired them unless you look really close they look ok not perfect by passable just one of the joys of modelling I’m sure we’ve all bent and snapped of bits we didn’t want to in our adventures into the miniature world

HMS Hood 1/200 Hachette /Amati Wooden kit Build Part 131

Ok time to step up if you pardon the pun this entire part was about constructing 10 sets of steps 7 of which are seen here the rubber hosing and wooden blocks are for the motorised water version which this not so the 1st 4 pages of instructions do not apply

Roughly the same procedure for most with a couple of additional railings and platforms left and right for 2 of them

They haven’t been painted yet as I’m waiting for some brown paint in various colours and shades to arrive I tried making brown using orange and blue or red and green and the results were not good so I gave up and ordered some instead

HMS Hood 1/200 Hachette /Amati Wooden kit Build Part 132 More Steps

Yep along with a wooden piece made up of around a dozen pieces and 8 more steps to build they are all sequenced so you have Steps A built Steps B built Steps C not yet used Steps D all 10 built Steps E F G & H not yet used but I think they will be soon
The actual step building is one of the best I’ve seen you have a staybright metal cast set of steps to which you attach the handrails so much easier than those on the Hachette /Agora metal Bismarck where they were photo etched you had to bend the handrails into place then twist the individual steps through 45 degrees in so doing you buckle the handrail if not carefully done none of that on this build
The wooden structure needs a good clean up before it’s painted just to point out its not going to be left in that state once the glue has throughly dried overnight

Greetings again so we now start building the components for the bridge I believe although I could be wrong anyway we’re off to the world of filler looking at the 1st piece of the assembly nice big gap and seam line right down the centre
Next we add some of the previously built sub assemblies to the next set of decks which I call the bridge I’ve also repainted the decking in it’s final colour scheme as well
Finally I’ve dry fitted the whole assembly onto the main deck to see what it looks like this concludes part 133 only 7 more to go

Regards

Apologies for lack of posting but as you can see the parts per issue has increased in some stages to 40 separate sections which take an age to do
So on to adding detail to the main bridge this second level is made entirely out of brass sheet pe and as such is stuck with ca I’m not a fan of this type of glue and frankly the amount of brass pe in this model is around 2000 pieces all reliant on ca glue which I believe they could have moulded in plastic allowing the use of Tamiya cement which we know is good and resistant to breakages due to the way it fuses the plastic surfaces together whereas ca glue is like a layer of cement in a course of bricks and seems to have problems after or about 5 years in the open maybe affected by ultraviolet in the atmosphere who knows
The last picture in this sequence shows the next level being prepared by gluing and clamping 2 deck pieces together and leaving overnight to set

Here’s where we really start on the brasswork pe in a big way this again constructed totally from brass pe sheets and some of the parts were impossible to shape so I resorted to card those are the white parts you can see in the photos
Hopefully when painted you shouldn’t be able to tell the difference between them and the real pe
The fit of some of these parts was awful necessitating using ca glue as a filler and smoothing it out as I went it looks a mess at present but once painted should be presentable
I also had issues with various ladders not fitting these too had to be persuaded to fit with net result handrails became detached as can be see by the handrail still brass as I had to clean all the paint off it so the glue would take hence the lack of grey on that part

HMS Hood 1/200 Hachette /Amati Wooden kit Build Part 136

We now take lower bridge and join it to upper part of the bridge where the join is a type of wooden peg into a hole the hole on the underneath of the upper part of the bridge wasn’t big enough to the peg of the lower bridge to fit into requiring it to be enlarged by filing until the peg fitted in so doing another piece from the underneath the upper bridge detached itself and will need regluing
Next we measured and cut the start of the tripod mast assembly and that’s as far as I have got as I had to paint one of the decks on the upper lower bridge a sand colour to imitate wood probably and I’m waiting for that to dry before assembling all those rangefinders
