View attachment 57136View attachment 57137View attachment 57138View attachment 57139

the next thing i did was to cut some more stanchions to the size given in the manual and they are a little bit bigger than the one's on the frames but i will need to cover them anyway to match the new one's

Knife slipped as well when leveling off the rails so got to replace those bits again before capping the rails but these things happen

cheers steve

Wow, the oil has made a huge difference. Great progress Steve, I don't comment much in the ship section but I am watching with interest.

Thanks for the comment and yes it has made a big difference and very pleased with the outcome the oil has brought out the natural colours in the wood better than i expected tbh

As im finding out with this kit some of the things are just not right ie the cast fittings supplied, in the manual the photos show these fittings as wooden so i can only presume this was a cost cutting exercise but to me they just dont look right at all and im going to have a go at scratch building some of them if i can, also i have found that some of the measurments are wrong like the bulwark stanchions are 5mm at the top together with a 2mm plank when i went to school that made 7mm width for the rail caps and what have they given me 5mm so had to go out and by some more wood for the caps and while i was at it got a sheet of mahogany to help me with some of the other things im thinking of redoing, but hey look on the bright side im learning new skills so its got to be worth it dont you think ?

thanks ole,the last couple of days been busy adding a couple of coats of paint using yellow ocre and black paint for the wales to the sides before capping the rails

i have also decided to have a go at scratch building a few of the fittings as i think they would look better than the cast metal ones supplied and those i cant do i will get online as my local model shop does not sell scale boat stuff

View attachment 57378View attachment 57379View attachment 57380the gun carrage should not be a problem but i think the grattings may well prove to be a problem but will give it a go first because the cast ones are not very good at all.

understand what your saying their ole iv'e just spent the best part of 2hrs trying to make a grating with a 2mm gap between each piece but they just kept breaking in my fingers, i dont have a vice or any fancy tools just my knifes and files and a modelling saw and my rotary tool so things are going to be a bit harder for me still thats the fun part. Anyway iv'e had a go at making a capstan and also the pre cast lifeboat that came with the kit i have planked it and will give it a coat of paint i think that will improve the look of it and save me having to buy a new one.

View attachment 57385View attachment 57386View attachment 57387View attachment 57388View attachment 57389View attachment 57390for this i used a piece of dowel used some of the spare mahogany planking i had left cut down for the strips on the lower half and i topped off with some walnut veneer strips sanded it then i have given it a coat of danish oil a couple more coats of that should harden it all up and improve the look.

View attachment 57391View attachment 57392View attachment 57393 i think when this is painted it will look ok.

iv'e also had another look at the fittings and noticed that the belaying pins were plastic so i have gone and ordered some wooden ones and some wooden gratings while i was at it

still waiting on a few bits from cmb which should arrive any day now but wont be using them till next trip so no panic, last day today working on the ship so i was up early and been hard at it.Got to the stage where i was supposed to put the bits on but i did'nt fancy using those as they are just black plastic and the pics in the instruction book shows wooden ones so knuckled down and made my own which was a little tricky as they are only 3x3x6mm and i think look more to scale than the plastic ones supplied.

View attachment 57497View attachment 57498View attachment 57499View attachment 57500View attachment 57501View attachment 57502View attachment 57503 i have also started adding some of the decorative pieces but used my own colour scheme for them and im painting them all gold rather than the white suggested and i think look better and since im building this to please me im just going to go with what i prefer a bit of artistic license shall we say

View attachment 57504View attachment 57505View attachment 57506View attachment 57507View attachment 57508 and finally i have assembled the rudder and tiller arm, another fiddley job

View attachment 57509View attachment 57510View attachment 57511View attachment 57512View attachment 57513View attachment 57503View attachment 57514 turned out well i think upto now and begining to come together.
