Has anyone made a booth out of a cardboard box?
Hi Bob and a belated Happy Birthday too!!! I made my first booth out of a couple of cardboard boxes in 2015. A smaller box to hold the extraction fan and taped onto the back of a larger one. I only have one decent pic to give you an idea how it looked,
It worked ok, but the fan was too small in diameter and didn't have enough power (filter makes it look bigger). I used a piece of filter from my overhead stove extractor cut to size. It had to sit on the shelf so the fan could blow out the open window (no hose). I live under the roof and for a few years it worked well, on windless days of course...

For a year or so I just airbrushed with the model in a large cardboard box. I only used acrylics and wore a face mask. No children or pets around and near an open window. It worked fine as a stop gap solution.
It won’t shut it off either, the compressor will cut out when the tank is full. Also don’t forget I would match any deal you can find.

As far as I know there is no thermal cutoff, and a few reports online of these "burning out" seem to support that. This is why it's a good idea to get one with an air tank, as it saves the compressor working overtime. Probably best to limit use to an hour or so, for the same reason. Again from memory there was a forum post of one of these as286's lasting 10 years. I assume that's with care, and regular moisture removal.
An hour is a lot of painting on a model kit. I think my whole plane took less than that in total
ps, to second an earlier comment I'd go for the airbrush & compressor bundle. If you get into it you can buy another airbrush later.
My old AS186 (from many years ago) had instructions saying limit it to twenty minutes continuous spraying at a time…….

Was that with a tank Tim? Although in reality 20 mins is probably more than enough to prime a whole model.
Yes, it was a tanked model, but it’s the compressor that overheats, the tank is pretty much incidental.

If you're a professional & using the a/b a lot of the time, OK - but spraying the basecoat on a large ( 1/32 ) aircraft won't take that long. - and if the compressor is getting hot through a high ambient temperature, then you'll be having problems with spraying paint anyway. More fans? more noise, more power used.................

I wouldn't worry too much about the compressor overheating, I've run mine for at least a couple of hours during the middle of the last heat wave and it didn't affect it in any way... it has a built in cut off so like 'stillp' Pete has already said 'unless you are using the air as quick as the compressor can compress it shouldn't be a problem..
